Google Search Umami Land

A delightful virtual theme park that immerses you in the rich tapestry of washoku

A delightful digital theme park made of Japanese food. Guests could roam freely among oversized dishes and culinary attractions that highlight the diversity of Japanese cuisine.

With Google Trends showing a global rise in searches for Japanese food and takeaway orders, Google saw an opportunity to introduce people to the tasty universe of Japan’s food culture, known as washoku. But while the initial idea was based on attracting tourists in the Land of the Rising Sun, the pandemic and its effects on international travel presented an unforeseeable challenge that prompted us to come up with a new alternative.

Reshaping the original concept, Umami Land was born as a free-roaming WebGL experience that features our lovely Omusubi, helping users learn about and taste Japanese cuisine.

The 3D artwork is intricately illustrated and animated, capturing the meticulous craftsmanship synonymous with Japanese chefs.

Available in multiple languages, this experience aims to whet the appetites of international visitors and encourage them to learn more about Japanese food through Google searches. Each dish is accompanied by links to Google search results, providing detailed information about the dish and suggesting local restaurants where it can be sampled.

“Umami Land is a must try for literally anyone and everyone. Enjoy the charming graphics while you learn a few things about Japanese cuisine and be inspired to go eat out at a Japanese restaurant afterwards.”
